Check out the Unreal Development Kit Beginner’s Guide. I have been interested in learning UDK for some time now but never really any way of learning step by step how to use it. Sure a few link here and there, maybe a YouTube video of some kid who is camera shy when he’s not even showing his face, but nothing that was really effective. After reading maybe the first 5-6 chapters of this ebook, I feel like a got a good grip on how to get started with making environments in UDK. I still have some reading to go, but as of now I understand when it’s better to work entirely from this program instead of importing assets from something else such as Maya. I also have a better understanding of lighting environments. I plan on posting some photos soon, maybe even a brief walk through of the level I’m designing.

Take a look at the UDK Game Programming with Scripting: Beginner’s Guide. I am not a huge fan of programming, but I will admit this ebook gave me a good understanding of what goes into programming a game with the Unreal development kit. From creating custom classes to enemy functionality, the entire process has plenty of reference material including example code and pictures to explain what your are setting up. I have not finished the entire book, but after reading a few chapters I already have a better understanding or programming in UDK.

If your looking for good instruction on creating animations for Android, I recommend the Android 3.0 Animations Beginner Guide. I’m used to creating animations for video, and wasn’t sure how those same skills could apply to a mobile platform. This guide walks through every single step including what is necessary, why it’s necessary, and how to do it. If you have no background experience in animation or even working on a mobile OS, this beginner’s guide will give you a great start in the right direction.
